π― Lesson Goal
In English, articles tell the listener if we are talking about a specific thing, a general thing, or any thing. Because Portuguese and English use articles differently, native Portuguese speakers often add articles where English drops them, or drop them where English requires them.
π The Three Article Types
Here is a quick overview of the three options you have before a noun:
| Article | When to use it | Veterinary Example |
|---|---|---|
| A / An (Indefinite) |
Use for ONE general thing, or mentioning something for the first time. | "I need a syringe." (Any syringe will do) |
| The (Definite) |
Use when the listener knows exactly WHICH thing you are talking about. | "Please pass me the syringe." (The one on the table right next to you) |
| None (Zero Article) |
Use for plural or uncountable nouns when speaking in general. | "Cats hide pain well." (All cats in general) |
π Main Rules
Here are the top three rules that Portuguese speakers find tricky.
Rule 1: First vs. Second Mention
Use A/An when you introduce a singular noun for the first time. Once it is introduced, it becomes specific, so you must switch to The.
β Correct: "I saw a dog today. The dog had a broken leg."
Rule 2: Professions
Unlike Portuguese, English always requires an article before a singular profession.
β Correct: "I am a veterinarian."
β Wrong: "I am veterinarian."
π Portuguese vs. English Comparison
Let's look at the direct translations to see why these mistakes happen. Pay close attention to when Portuguese uses an article but English does not.
| Portuguese Habit | Common Mistake | Correct English |
|---|---|---|
| PT: Sou veterinΓ‘ria. (No article before profession) |
I am vet. | I am a vet. |
| PT: Os cachorros sΓ£o fofos. (Definite article for general plurals) |
The dogs are cute. | Dogs are cute. |
| PT: A Dra. Sarah Γ© Γ³tima. (Definite article before names) |
The Dr. Sarah is great. | Dr. Sarah is great. |
| PT: O meu paciente... (Definite article before possessives) |
The my patient... | My patient... |

π§ Extra Notes
Keep these extra rules in mind to sound completely natural.
Before a consonant sound, say thuh (e.g., thuh dog, thuh cat).
Before a vowel sound, say thee (e.g., thee animal, thee operation).
- Work: "I am at work." (Not at the work)
- Bed: "I am going to bed." (Not to the bed)
- Home: "I stayed at home." (Not at the home)
